A draft text, proposed identities(Mark) and visualization for the IDW2012 primary positioning document – FACT SHEET

Design Today

in its nearly infinite manifestations flows from the wellspring of the human cultural narrative – a beginning, middle and end rooted in the first flames of human sentience, evolving through the transience of many todays it is an emerging certainty in the unfolding fabric of our increasingly uncertain,

Shared Tomorrows.

The Mark #1

The Bunga Terung, which translates to the eggplant flower, is the first tattoo a Borneo male would receive. The Bunga Terung is a coming of age tattoo which marks the passage of a boy into manhood. The Bunga Terung has a spiral at the center of the eggplant flower the Tali Nyawa, which means the rope of life and is identical to the underside of a tadpole which symbolizes the beginning of a new life.

The Mark #2

The FernFlame is extracted from graphic imagery developed in 2010 by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak School of Business and Design students for the initial pitch document to ICOGRADA. It represented an exploration of  indigenous themes and the experience of a present generation of visual communicators engaging with and evolving with the cultural continuum .

A Small World Of Design

REDISCOVERY focuses a benign lens on an indigenous and local Design microcosm, providing for world design scrutiny and reflection a uniquely formed and vital human imprint . An island in the world. A world story belonging to no one – if not everyone – awaiting rediscovery in its retelling.

A Past, Present and Future Context For Design

Rediscovery offers a revelation and celebration of the first truths of indigenous knowledge by academics, design and craft practitioners. It is an opportunity to experience the uniquely energetic dynamic of a local>world Design incubator and to encourage, learn from and contribute to an undertaking towards a sustainable future culture shaped by design, education and responsibility. One that while partly a response to a history of exploitation of human and natural resources, it embraces the innovative hybridisation of cross cultural fertilisation  with universal first truths originally revealed in flickering light beneath the canopy of ancient rainforests.
